A John Kotter Library

Both Barack Obama and John McCain are presenting themselves as candidates of change this election season. It's a change year. The country is ripe for change. We need change. Have I mentioned change yet?

All well and good, but what does it all mean... what is at the Heart of Change? I suppose it looks different to each of us, but ultimately, the nebulous task of Leading Change is about developing a vision, uniting others around it and working toward that transformation. It is a necessary part of the life-cycle of nations, and of each enterprise within them.

John Kotter knows this better than anybody, and has written eloquently and extensively on the topic for over two decades. Today sees the release a his latest book, one that deals with the primary prerequisite for any significant change--A Sense of Urgency. As Kotter puts it:

The urgency question is not limited to any particular class of organization or group. Insufficient urgency, with all of its consequences, can be found in winners and losers, businesses and governments. It can undermine a plant, an office, or a whole country.

He has written about the need for urgency before, identifying it as one of the eight steps of successful transformation in previous books, but he felt it was such an important issue--that complacency is doing so much damage to our individual organizations and overall economy--that he has deemed it necessary to dedicate an entire book to the matter.

To celebrate the release of this new book and introduce Kotter to the uninitiated, we are offering a sampling of his backlist. 100 lucky winners will receive three books from Kotter's Harvard catalogue: Leading Change, The Heart of Change and John P. Kotter on What Leaders Really Do.

To lead in today's world, you must be able to inspire, enable, and implement change. John Kotter offers the lessons and tools to accomplish that in his work.
