Amazing Output!

You know who amazes me? Ryan Adams. Not just because the dude can sing like a songbird and write tremendous songs, but because of the amount of work that he puts out. He's still in his twenties and has more albums (including previous band Whiskeytown) than the city of Chicago has had playoff births in the history of their baseball teams. Anyone who has ever tried to finish a song knows just how unbelievable this is (and if you only know the radio stuff, do yourself a huge favor and start from the beginning with Heartbreaker). But you know who amazes me even me even more than Ryan Adams? If you guessed Toyota, you are right. Toyota's unmatched thirst for innovation and the breadth of it has, in just a short amount of time, made them worth more than GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, and Honda COMBINED. So, how did they do it? The answer....1,000,000! That's right, that's how many new ideas Toyota implements every year, and when you read Matthew May's new book, The Elegant Solution, you will learn how to create a culture that allows you and your company to be just as creative and innovative.

Not all of the new ideas Toyota implements are headline making ventures. New ideas are implemented from the ground up, from the factory floors, up through middle management, over to the design teams, and way up in the corporate suites. You've probably all hear about Toyota's lauded production system. You've most certainly seen a Lexus or Scion. These are just the shining examples that we see, but in order to create and produce these systems and products, innovations must happen in every facet of business.

Another thing I love is when business books are told straight from the horses mouth. I'm not saying Matthew May resembles a horse in any way, but he is senior advisor at the University of Toyota, so who better to tell us exactly how the company creates so many new ideas. I mean, this is information that corporations have been pining for and now all everyone has to do is get a book. It almost seems to good to be true that Mr. May offers three core principles and ten key practices that will allow any company to implement successful business innovation.

And by the way, it's not JUST innovation. It's not about creating just to create. The new ideas you implement have to have three things - value, opportunity, and impact. You have to want to use new thoughts and technologies and practices with the understanding that you are pursuing perfection. That is precisely what Toyota does, and how they get there, how they do it at every stage in the game, is now written in one book. The Elegant Solution. Check it out.
